As most of you are aware, the Good Shepherd Catholic Parish Finance Council has been actively working to find a new owner and purpose for the former St. Bernard School building in Breda. A local parishioner had expressed interest in purchasing the building, repairing the roof and utilizing the majority of the space for storage rentals. To allow this transfer to move forward, the property needed to be rezoned for commercial use. On August 10, the Breda City Council voted against the requested zoning change. 

While GSCP is currently in a strong enough financial position to meet our regular obligations, including Kuemper assessments, we do not have the resources to absorb a roof replacement estimated at more than $100,000. Unfortunately, each significant rainfall brings additional damage to the building. 

With the proposed sale no longer able to move forward as planned, the Finance Council is now gathering estimates for demolition. Because demolition would also require asbestos removal, we anticipate the total cost will be a substantial six-figure expense—well beyond the parish’s current financial ability to pay. If a workable and financially responsible solution cannot be identified, we may have no choice but to discontinue utilities and secure the building. 

We know the former St. Bernard School holds many memories for our parish and community, and these are not decisions being taken lightly. We will continue exploring available options and will share additional information as it becomes available.
