Mariella “Lollie” Derner, age 81 of Sac City, IA, passed away on Sunday, October 17
th, 2021 peacefully at her home after an extended battle with cancer. Lollie was born on Dec. 31, 1939 to parents Steve and Florence (Hermsen) Loew of Maple River, IA. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Francis Catholic Church in Maple River, IA.
Lollie grew up in Maple River with her family on the Loew Dairy farm. She attended Mount Carmel Elementary School and later graduated from Kuemper Catholic High School in Carroll, IA in 1957.
On August 8, 1959, Lollie married the love of her life, James Derner, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Maple River, IA. They moved to Sac City where they started their family and were blessed with five children: Geri, Greg, Scott, Gina, and Chris. Lollie worked for Loring Hospital as a nursing assistant and raised the family on their acreage south of town.
In 1981, the family moved to Sioux City and Lollie continued to tend to the family. She eventually returned to the medical assistance field and worked at the Woodbury County Home, Hallmark Care Center, and ultimately retired as an aide from Siouxland Podiatry. They remained in Sioux City until 2011 and then moved back to Sac City.
Lollie enjoyed crosswords and puzzle books of all kinds, and the Days Of Our Lives soap opera was an everyday staple in her life…missing very few episodes over the course of the show’s 56 year duration. But what she enjoyed most was spending time with friends and family. She was always up for a game of cribbage or dominoes, and her passion was euchre that she would play almost every other night with her late husband Jim. She loved to bake, especially around the holidays. Many have tried, and many have failed trying to duplicate her popcorn candy and apricot filled cookies. In her younger years, Lollie spent time at Indian Lanes on a bowling league where she was a 200 average bowler and, in the community, she donated back to others through the Meals on Wheels program. Most recently after their return to Sac City, she always looked forward to the Loring Hospital Luncheons where she would get to reunite with friends from the past and meet new friends that have spent time working at the hospital.
Lollie has always been a sharing and welcoming person. What was hers was yours, and she lived by a creed of “there is always room for one more”. She was a kind, caring, and loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a steady servant of the Lord, her faith was unwavering, and she and her family knew where her eternal home was. This brought comfort to all around her knowing that, even though she is now absent from her earthly body, she will forever be present with the Lord in heaven.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her children : Geri Derner of Ames, IA, Greg Derner and his wife Jeannette of Shiloh, IL, Scott Derner and his wife Elizabeth of Sioux City, IA, Gina Hults and her husband Jason of Villisca, IA, and Chris Derner and his wife Jill of Waconia, MN; 16 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; siblings Larry and Mary Jane Derner of Maple River, IA, Steve and Deb Loew of Des Moines, IA, Bob and Aggie Snyder of Des Moines, IA, Katie Hoffman of Carroll, IA; in-laws Marie Loew of Maple River, IA, Mae Knobbe of Carroll, IA, Eileen Bruning of Garden Grove, CA, Eugene and Vera Derner of Dedham, IA, Ione Schloegel of Rochester, MN, Annette Ratigan of Bancroft, IA, and Don and Peg Derner of Lake View, IA; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives and friends.
